The UK Government has just announced how it will split the budget set aside for UK wide broadband upgrades. Earlier this year £114 million was promised to 10 UK cities to pay for extensive city-wide work to upgrade networks to provide the fastest connection speeds in Europe.
The breakdown includes £25 million to London, and £14 million to Leeds and Bradford. The rest of the money will be allocated 10 other cities including Manchester, Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh.
This is great news for small businesses who rely on fast internet connections to operate at their maximum. The work will be city wide, meaning that both city centre businesses and homes will be able to access to faster connections.
Upon the announcement Culture Secretary, Maria Miller told BBC News: “These 10 cities have produced ambitious and comprehensive plans, which will turn them into digital leaders, and give their local economies a real boost. The new investment will help put these cities at the centre of the digital stage, competing for jobs and investment with the best in the world.”
The plan is the ensure that 230,000 homes and 55,000 business premises have to new ‘ultra-fast’ broadband connections by 2015.
