Ninety three percent of small businesses in the UK are ‘quite’ or ‘very’ happy despite the current economic climate, according to the American Express Small Business Barometer.
Citing motivations such as ‘being the master of my own destiny’, ‘doing something I like or believe in’ and ‘reaping the financial benefits of my own efforts’, small business owners are pleased with their current situations and have job satisfaction.
Despite the current buoyant mood amongst business owners, there has also been a call for the promotion of a healthy work/life balance. 46 per cent of business owners said that they have gone without time off in the past 12 months because of working commitments and 47 per cent are working longer hours.
“It is encouraging that despite the ongoing challenging economic environment, small business owners say they are happy at work. They know they have tough challenges ahead but appear to be gritting their teeth and focusing on the positives,” says Stacey Sterbenz, Director for American Express Small Businesses Services UK.
Business success is also enjoying a cheerful mood as the majority of small businesses say that their results are in line with expectations and 19 per cent of businesses surveyed saying that their business is performing better than expected.
The forecast for business is also looking good, as over half of those surveyed expecting to grow over the remainder of the year.
